When a company starts its automation journey, it finishes its first proof of concept (POC) and builds it first few automations (bots); usually there are shouts of joy and celebrations. Slowly as the year progresses, problems begin to arise, such as automation projects taking longer than expected, little or no results are experienced, expert developers are hard to find and even harder to keep, technology changes before the automations are complete, the organization was expecting green dollar return on investment (ROI) and the automation only produced blue dollar ROI and more. A Deloitte survey of 400 global firms found that 63 percent of surveyed organizations did not meet delivery deadlines for RPA projects. For the ones that succeeded, longer-than-anticipated bot implementations delayed ROI. Furthermore, an EY study found that 30 to 50 percent of initial RPA projects fail.

Having Issues with Automation?

If you are thinking of this, then you would not be alone. Many times, automation is sold by vendors and partners as a panacea for all your organizational challenges. The good news is, many times your RPA program is not unrecoverable. RPA is perfect for tedious and repetitive processes, but it cannot be used for all processes. This concept seems simple, but it is the fundamental reason RPA does not work as well in some organizations. Here are some more critical questions to ask yourself are:

  • Are the processes too dynamic or experience driven to automate?
  • Does the user interface (UI) change too often?
  • Are Business Units and office politics putting a hold on progress?
  • Do you truly understand the process and/or are your expectations realistic?
